What Is Infrared Sauna?

Infrared sauna therapy uses infrared light — the same type of warmth you feel from sunlight on your skin — to heat the body from the inside out. Unlike traditional saunas that raise the air temperature to 150–195°F to warm you through convection, infrared light penetrates up to 2 inches below the skin surface, generating deep-tissue heat at a more comfortable ambient temperature of 120–145°F.

This deeper penetration means infrared sauna reaches muscle, connective tissue, and joints more effectively — making it especially valuable for recovery, pain relief, and detoxification. The lower ambient temperature also makes sessions more sustainable, allowing for the full 60-minute session that maximizes therapeutic benefit.

At beem® Reston, infrared sauna is offered alongside red light therapy and near-infrared light therapy in the same private suite — making each session a full-spectrum recovery experience.

Benefits of Infrared Sauna

💪

Muscle Recovery

Deep infrared heat accelerates lactic acid clearance, reduces DOMS, and drives circulation to fatigued muscle tissue — enabling faster return to training. Used by Hyrox and CrossFit athletes throughout NoVA.

🔥

Detoxification

Infrared heat at 120–145°F induces a deep, cleansing sweat. Sweating is one of the body's primary detox pathways — infrared sauna supports this process at a deeper level than exercise alone.

❤️

Cardiovascular Health

A 20-year Finnish cohort study (JAMA Internal Medicine, 2015) found regular sauna use associated with significantly lower cardiovascular disease risk. Regular infrared sauna use has been studied for heart health and circulation benefits.

😴

Sleep Quality

Many beem® Reston guests report improved sleep after sessions. Infrared heat raises core body temperature; as the body cools post-session, it triggers the natural thermoregulatory sleep response. One reviewer: "I slept so good Saturday night."

🧘

Stress & Relaxation

The combination of warmth, private space, and the parasympathetic nervous system response to heat makes infrared sauna one of the most effective stress relief tools available without medication.

🦴

Joint & Pain Relief

Deep-tissue heat eases muscle and joint discomfort by increasing circulation to affected areas. Many guests managing chronic pain conditions, stiffness, and inflammation use infrared sauna as a regular part of their wellness routine.

The Research

Peer-Reviewed Evidence

Cardiovascular & Longevity: A 20-year Finnish cohort study (n=2,315) published in JAMA Internal Medicine (2015) found that people who used a sauna 4–7 times per week had a 50% lower risk of cardiovascular disease mortality compared to once-weekly users. A 2018 follow-up in BMC Medicine extended findings to overall mortality outcomes. Source: Laukkanen et al., JAMA Internal Medicine, 2015.

Recovery & Athletic Performance: Infrared sauna post-exercise has been studied for its role in lactate clearance and accelerated soft-tissue recovery. The deep-tissue heat improves circulation without placing additional cardiovascular load on a fatigued body.

Infrared sauna is a wellness modality. Studies cited reflect peer-reviewed research; individual outcomes vary. Guests with medical conditions, cardiovascular concerns, or who are pregnant should consult their physician before beginning sessions.
